Retro & Roaring! A peek into Marvy Olugu’s lookbook

by ‘Ifreke Inyang

Marvy Olugu doubles as the creative director and designer for the brand Marvee Sketch. She gives us a lowdown of her debut collection named ‘Marvel by Marvee Sketch’.

This collection is divided into three parts and each of them is inspired by two
historical eras she loves the most: The Roaring Twenties and The Swinging Fifties. In this collection, she also expresses her love for classic long evening silhouettes.

The first set of the collection is the playful look, inspired by the minimal
60’s colour blocking. She played with a lot of bold colours, African prints,
embellishments done with sequins and beads and also had some floral details done. All the pieces here are short giving it a naughty free spirited chic look.

The second look is the front cutaway tail tuxedos inspired by the 20th century. She added a splash of colour, used nets, African prints as well as some other plane
fabrics giving it some form of originality and modern look.

The last look, which is her favourite, are the sophisticated evening dresses. These dresses were cut to flatter a woman’s curves and accentuate the best part of her body. She used lace fabrics, sheer added embellishments and some classic accessories like
gloves, pearls and a shawls.
