The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 20-0 in favor of  President Trump’s nominee for FBI Director Christopher Wray, Thursday. His nomination would now go to the Senate floor, where House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated he intends to have Wray confirmed before the August recess, according to Politico.

Top Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein said;  “He committed to doing the job by the book and without any regard to partisan political influence, he testified that his loyalty is to the Constitution and to the rule of law, not to any ideology or individual, including the president”.

The praise for Wray did not rub off on the President who picked him following Trump’s recent interview with the New York Times. In a statement, Trump said he would never have nominated Jeff Sessions if he knew the Attorney General would recuse himself from the Russian probe into the 2016 elections and possible ties with the Kremlin.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal also said Trump’s comments are “shocking and [raise] the specter of obstruction of justice”. “We have a responsibility to ensure the FBI is protected”. In the interview, Trump also says the FBI director “really reports directly to the president of the United States, which is interesting” and stressed that “we’re going to have a great new FBI director.

Chairman of the Judiciary committee,  Chuck Grassley also said: “Beyond credentials, I believe Wray has the right view of the job”. He said that his loyalty ‘is to the Constitution and the rule of law”.
