Sheriff says INEC cannot reject his candidate for Edo governorship

Ali Modu Sheriff, the factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot reject the candidate presented by his faction for the Edo state gubernatorial election.

Sheriff, whose faction of the PDP had presented Matthew Iduoriyekemwen as its candidate, insisted that his candidate remains the rightful candidate of the party, describing as rumour the recent reports that INEC had accepted the candidate of the Ahmed Markafi-led national working committee.

Speaking through his deputy, Cairo Ojougboh, when he was paid a courtesy visit by members of the young Professionals from the South-South, Sheriff said that he was sure that INEC would adopt his candidate.

INEC had rejected Sheriff’s candidate based on the recent ruling of a Port Harcourt court that removed him as the chairman of the party.

Furthermore, the commission had pointed out that it did not monitor the primary election of the Sheriff faction of the PDP hence why it cannot accept their candidate for the gubernatorial election that is scheduled to hold on September 9.

On his part, the chairman of the national working committee, Ahmed Markafi, while hosting the PDP north-west zone, said:

“Though all legal interventions have been determined in favour of the decisions of the Port Harcourt national convention, the job has not yet finished.  In the past, I have said severally that the path of peace and reconciliation is the best path.”
