YNAIJA ENDORSEMENT: We endorse Abdalla Wali for Sokoto governor

The Sokoto state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party is currently at loggerheads over the primaries which made Senator Abdalla Wali the party’s governorship flagbearer.

That the PDP is still involved in infighting over the eligibility of its
flagbearer will make matters easy for the opposition who adopted the current speaker of the federal House of Assembly, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal as their governorship candidate.

Aminu Tambuwal would also ride on the popularity of incumbency of its party and who has gotten the full support from the outgoing governor of the state, Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko and hope to win the election.

In another positive development for Tambuwal, the influence of his
party’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari will also rub off.

One thing that might pose a threat to Aminu Tambuwal is his style of governance. Aminu Tambuwal is being accused of playing elitist politics in the state, unlike the current governor, Aliyu Wammakko, who regularly connects with the masses.

The same style of governance is what Wali will bring to the table if the PDP can get its act together in that state. Wali, connects a lot more with the man on the street than Tambuwal has ever attempted to.

Asides their human relations, it is our duty to look at the records of
both men.

Senator Wali, who coincidentally, is a cousin to Aminu Tambuwal, served as the Chair of the Senate’s Committee on Economic Affairs, during which time he worked closely with the then Central Bank of Nigeria, Joseph Sanusi, in trying to reschedule Nigeria’s foreign debts, a feat that, while not successful, set the tone for the next economic management team to wipe out those debts. He then went on to serve as the Minister for National Planning in the dying days of the Obasanjo Administration.

On his part, Aminu Tambuwal, has been around. He has been in the ANPP, the DPP, back to the ANPP, then to the PDP, before his current incarnation in the APC. Within the House, which he has been in since 2003, Tambuwal has served in various committees, which have produced a lot of reports. It is on record that the House of Representatives was a lot more active than the Senate during his time as Speaker.

However, given Sokoto’s profile as one of Nigeria’s poorest states, and a state in dire need of a man who is not far-removed from the people that he governs, and also in view of Wali’s time working with the economic team and the National Planning Commission, we have opted to endorse Abdalla Wali as governor of Sokoto state.
