“Don’t run after them but shift the pattern. You don’t have to have everyone like you,….

There are eight types of mean girls in the office, according to Melbourne-based psychologist and author Meredith Fuller.

‘Working with Mean Girls’ provides practical advice for women on how to manage nasty, manipulative, and destructive women in their workplace.

Fuller said the all-too-common excluder type included women who were the ones who ignored others in the office.

“You’re emotionally feeling that you’re not wanted and so it’s very difficult to be robust in contribution,” the Courier Mail quoted her as saying.

“You’re seen as a potential rival so they are going to freeze you out because they don’t want you there,” she said.

She said another common one was the toxic type who act as friends but are two-faced.

“They probably compliment you a lot, they’re very smiley and chirpy and want to help you,” she said.

“After you get sucked in there’s this two-faced type of behaviour. They might say one thing to your face but to other people they’re putting you down or gossiping about you.”

But Fuller said there was a clear difference between bullying and bitching.

“With bullying it’s much clearer but with bitching it’s so subtle. Sometimes it’s non-verbal and no-one else may notice it,” she said.

“Don’t run after them but shift the pattern. You don’t have to have everyone like you, you just have to be tolerated,” she added.

The eight bit__y types Fuller highlights in her book ‘Working with Mean Girls’ are:

1. The Excluder- ignores you

2. The Insecure- obsessive fault finder

3. The Toxic- syrupy, slimy, two-faced

4. The Narcissist- ‘I’m the Star, you’re the servant’

5. The Screamer- angry shouter

6. The Liar- gamey troublemaker, never to be trusted

7. The Incompetent- steals your work while making you do her job

8. The Not-A-Bi__h- really competent and she’s got your number
