Terrible: Man arrested over murder of woman and her 9-month-old baby

A man was tonight arrested after a mother and her baby were found murdered at their home.

The bodies of the 25-year-old woman and her nine-month-old son were discovered by West Midlands Police at a house on Chells Grove in the Billesley area of Birmingham at around 10:30am.

Almost seven hours later a 28-year-old man in Dudley was arrested on suspicion of both murders.

A police spokesman said ‘The person in custody is known to the victims and officers are keen to stress that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the killings.’

Officers cordoned off the house on Chells Grove whilst forensic investigators examine the scene and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course to establish how the victims died.

Superintendent Jo Chilton from West Midlands Police said: ‘This is a terrible crime and my thoughts are with the family of the victims who have been left devastated by today’s events.

‘We have a man in custody and are not looking for anyone else, but I am keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone who may have seen anything which could assist our investigation.’

A police van and patrol car blocked the entrance to the road leading down to the grove this evening and two uniformed officers stood guard at the end of the quiet street.

Police were earlier alerted after concerns were raised about the safety of the occupants of the Chells Grove address. A serious case review and a domestic homicide review are expected to take place.

Due to previous contact between police and the man in custody, West Midlands Police said it has informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission who will look into any police involvement.

Supt Andy Shipman, from Birmingham South Local Policing Unit, said: ‘Today’s awful murders will of course send shockwaves through the community. My thoughts are with the family of those involved.

‘Local officers will be highly visible in the area throughout tonight and into the coming week. If you have any information that you think may be of value to this inquiry, please approach these officers.’
