Wizkid to headline 2026 Detty December Fest in Lagos
Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Wizkid has been announced as the first headliner for the 2026 Detty December Fest, which begins in Lagos on December 18. The singer will open the two-week festival, which will run until December 30.
Now in its second year, the festival will feature music, culture, food, fashion, and entertainment. Organisers have also introduced a second stage, the Pulse Stage, which will spotlight emerging artistes and new sounds from across Africa while Wizkid performs on the main stage. More headliners are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Air Peace calls for investigation into disrupted flights, citing financial losses
Air Peace has called for an investigation into the disruption of its operations by aviation unions at major airports in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu on Tuesday, August 11. The airline said the action, linked to disputes over ticket charges and unionisation, caused significant financial losses.
The disruption reportedly affected about 70 flights across the airline’s network, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded and disrupting their travel plans. Air Peace said the incident highlighted the need for greater scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the industrial action and its wider impact on the aviation sector.
The airline also referenced a 2024 Federal High Court ruling involving the proposed Nigeria Air deal with Ethiopian Airlines. The court restrained the Federal Government and its agencies from proceeding with the arrangement. Although the airlines involved had sought ₦2 billion in damages, the court did not award the claimed amount.
National policing bill: Presidency extends deadline for public input
The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for Nigerians and other stakeholders to submit memoranda and position papers on the proposed legislation to 5pm on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The Presidency had initially set Thursday, August 13, as the deadline. In a statement signed by Chief of Staff to the President and chairman of the working group, Femi Gbajabiamila, the extension was introduced to give individuals, organisations and institutions more time to make detailed contributions.
The proposed bill seeks to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for effective policing while promoting accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights. Legal practitioners, civil society groups, security professionals, state governments, academics and members of the public can submit their contributions through the official National Policing Bill portal.
Makinde picks ex-DSS Boss Lawal Daura as 2027 running mate
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced former Department of State Services (DSS) Director-General Lawal Daura as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election. Makinde, the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), unveiled Daura on Thursday at the party’s national convention in Bauchi.
According to the state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, Makinde said Daura was chosen to help address Nigeria’s security challenges. He also promised to tackle poverty and reverse what he described as the effects of poorly implemented policies over the past three years.
Makinde declared his presidential ambition in May, saying he wanted to “reset” Nigeria and give citizens a genuine choice in 2027. Daura served as DSS Director-General from July 2015 to August 2018 before his removal following a controversial operation at the National Assembly.
Selena Gomez and co-founders face a lawsuit over alleged investor fraud at Wondermind
Selena Gomez, her mother, Mandy Teefey, and Wondermind co-founder Daniella Pierson are facing a lawsuit from investors who accuse them of making false representations that led to nearly $1.2 million in investments in the mental health startup.
The lawsuit, filed in a US federal court in Delaware, alleges that investors were told Gomez would be closely involved in the company. The complaint claims that promised partnerships and initiatives never materialised, that the planned app was not developed, and that the founders failed to inform investors as the company struggled financially.
The investors say they became aware of alleged problems at Wondermind after media reports raised concerns about its management. Teefey has denied allegations made by former employees, while a spokesperson for Pierson disputed claims that she was pushed out of the company. Gomez, Teefey and Pierson launched Wondermind in 2021 to promote mental health awareness and provide resources for people navigating their emotional well-being.
