Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect attacked and burnt down a police station in Shani, Borno State late Monday afternoon.
The militants attacked the Divisional Police Station among other nearby residential buildings, shops and vehicles using Improvised Explosive Devices and petrol bombs.
Eyewitnesses say the militants opened fire indiscriminately with policemen reportedly fleeing the scene.
A resident of Shani disclosed that the gunmen came on motorcycles, attacked the station and also carted away weapons.
The Islamic sect have, since 2009, attacked several locations in the North-west of the country promoting their crusade against Western education which they plan to abolish.
On April 14, 2014, over 200 schoolgirls from the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, were abducted and taken away to an unknown destination.
The President Goodluck Jonathan administration has promised all within its power to stem the tide of violence and crush the Boko Haram insurgency for good.
