Michael Brooks, a Michigan man, is now facing charges for allowing his morbidly obese wife to sit in her own filth for days, ultimately leading to her death.
37-year-old Brooks admitted to the police that he left his wife without assistance and care for eight or nine days. 40-year-old Yolanda Reese-Brooks was removed from their home by fire crews dressed in haz mat suits, but not soon enough to save her life.
After days of being trapped in her own bed by her own girth without food and surrounded by maggots Yolanda was rushed to the hospital. Reese-Brooks had been incapable of removing herself from her bed for several months. Reese-Brooks died six days after being admitted to the hospital both from her morbid obesity and from other injuries.
Michael Brooks failed to take care of his wife after her bladder ruptured and her pelvis was crushed in a car accident in 2011. It was after this incident that Michael Brooks became his wife’s primary caretaker.
The Brooks family has four children, a 13-year-old, an 11-year-old and two-year-old twins who lived in the house with them. The police found no beds for the children and an empty fridge with expired meat. The insect infested home was not suitable for inhabiting.
According to Michael Brooks’ attorney, Child Protective Services have temporarily placed Brooks’ children with Yolanda Reese-Brooks’ sister. Brooks’ lawyer also reports that Brooks is devastated by the loss of his wife, labeling this case as “tragic”. Michael Brooks has been charged by Warren County with second-degree abuse of a vulnerable adult.
