Today’s Daily Brief: NBA wants Tambuwal’s security restored, Rivers guber aspirants battle Wike, Ogun PDP denies sacking exco, and more

The Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, has called on the Acting Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, to immediately restore police escort and security detail to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.

Two days after Mr. Tambuwal defected from Nigeria’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Nigeria Police withdrew his security details.

The Police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, had confirmed PREMIUM TIMES’ earlier report that Mr. Tambuwal was stripped of state protection because he decamped from the ruling PDP.

The Ogun State Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Waliu Oladipupo, has said there is no truth in the reports that the State Executive Committee of the party has been dissolved.

He said this on Sunday in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abeokuta.

He said state executive of the party, headed by Mr. Adebayo D,ayo was still intact.

He said, “The Adebayo Dayo-led state executive is intact. They (members) were not just elected but validated by several judicial interventions and pronouncements from the High Court to the Appeal Court.

A leader of Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State, Mr. Douye Diri, has advised former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, to drop his senatorial ambition and play the father figure for the young ones.

It was learnt that Alamieyeseigha, who is from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, had submitted his expression of interest form to run for the Senate in 2015.

Diri, the Principal Secretary to Governor Seriake Dickson, from Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA, has also declared for the senatorial seat having submitted his EIF.

Prince Tonye Princewill, one of the gubernatorial aspirants in Rivers State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the Ward Congress held on Saturday by the State PDP exco.

Princewill who had earlier on Friday joined fourteen other aspirants in calling for the cancellation of the exercise alleged that the ward congress had been compromised in order to favour former Education Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Princewill, in a statement signed by his media aide, called on the National PDP executives to resolve the Rivers State issue before it gets out of hand and avoid anything that will distract President Goodluck Jonathan.

But for the timely intervention of the locals, the former deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Peremobowei Ebebi, would have died in a boat mishap that claimed four persons in the state on Saturday.

While Ebebi lived to tell the story, an officer of the Department of State Security (DSS) was reportedly not fortunate, as he was said to be among the dead casualties.

The DSS officer, before the incident, was attached to the office of the state Project Monitoring Department located along the Imgbi Road, Bayelsa State.

He was said to have escorted the head of the department, Mr. Ball Oyarede, who is aspiring for a seat in the state House of Assembly, to Ekeremor Local Government Area for the just concluded ward congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
