Day 2 Recap of Protest: Anambra State Refuses to Participate in Nationwide Protest

Day 2 of the August nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest in Nigeria recorded more peace across the country, unlike its first day, which counted the deaths of many protesters.

While a curfew was placed on Kano and Jigawa states, its people defied these government orders. They came out on the streets to protest against their government and its policies, joining the people in Lagos State, who also came out to protest at various landmarks.

The residents of Anambra State remain quiet about the protest as they resume business operations in their state rather than participate in the #EndBadGovernance protest.

There were reports of people in Plateau and Delta States participating in the protest; however, they witnessed brutalisation from the paramilitary forces.

Military threatens to intervene in #EndBadGovernance protest if violence persists

The Nigerian military force has threatened to intervene in the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest as violence persists in the country, leading to chaos and deaths of protesters.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, stated that he would have to get involved as the protesters continued to loot and damage government properties, turning the country into a nation of anarchy.

There have been several reports of deaths across the country, and lots of businesses and banks have been forced to shut down since the protest began on August 1.

“The Armed Forces and the entire security agencies will not stand by and see that to continue. We want to warn those that are recalcitrant, those that don’t want to listen, that we will not fold our arms and allow this country to be destroyed,” he said.

Day 2 Recap of Protest: Anambra State Refuses to Participate in Nationwide Protest

Kaduna Electric has disconnected the Kaduna State Government House and other state government facilities due to its unpaid ₦2.9 billion debt.

According to the statement released by the Head of Corporate Communication, Abdul-Azeez Abdullahi, Kaduna Electric has made several attempts to resolve the situation with the proper officials at the Kaduna State House, but they were fruitless.

Kaduna Electric has called its actions necessary as the State Government has ignored its pleas and demands for payment of its ₦2.9 billion debt.

NANS swears to fight with universities over the ₦80k electricity bill

Day 2 Recap of Protest: Anambra State Refuses to Participate in Nationwide Protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has spoken up about the CVCNU’s decision to attach an ₦80k electricity bill to all Nigerian students’ fees, saying no Nigerian student would accept such a proposal.

Earlier this week, the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) announced that they were expending too much funds to satisfy their electricity debts since the increased tariffs by the NERC on all Band A customers.

The proposed attachment of ₦80,000 to all Nigerian students’ school fees was a solution to reduce the amount budgeted for electricity bills as universities, which once paid ₦60 million, are now forced to pay ₦200 million.

Kamala Harris emerges as the Democratic Party presidential candidate

Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the Democratic party’s nomination, officially confirming her chance to compete in the elections against the Republican party’s Donald Trump in November 2024.

Kamala Harris was the only candidate for the five-day e-voting of almost 4,000 party convention delegates. Her run as a presidential candidate makes her the first Black and South Asian woman to run for the presidency, following Hilary Clinton, who ran for the presidency against Donald Trump in 2016.

US President Joe Biden has congratulated Kamala Harris on her success so far, saying, “I couldn’t be prouder,” on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
