NLC, TUC and CNG reject 50% telecoms tariff hike

Top 5 Stories Of The Day | NLC, TUC, and CNG Reject 50% Telecoms Tariff Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) have all openly rejected the implementation of the 50% telecoms tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The three unions called the action insensitive as this was the first time the government would approve of the increment of telecom tariff in 13 years. Given the current inflation in the country, it would be difficult for Nigerians to adapt to the new change.

NLC called the hike a “clear assault on workers’ welfare and an abandonment of the people to corporate fat cats,” TUC said it was “one hike too many,” while CNG requested a fast reversal, but the telecom providers have refused to reverse the NCC-approved hike.

NUC announces that Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Optometry are now six-year courses

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced that medical science courses like Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Optometry will now be taught for a minimum of six years instead of five across all Nigerian universities.

The news further stated that upon completing the years of study, the students would be conferred with a “Doctor” (clinical session) rather than a Bachelor’s degree.

The information was shared by the NUC Acting Director of Public Affairs, Franca Chukwuonwo, however, he did not state when this new regulation would take effect across all Nigerian universities.

UK stands behind Nigeria in defending democracy

The United Kingdom has pledged its support for Nigeria’s military, promising to work hand-in-hand with the army to defeat all security threats to Nigeria.

The UK Defence Minister, Vernon Coaker, visited Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, where they shared their thoughts on reducing insecurity in Nigeria.

Vernon had called Nigeria more than a mere friend but a strategic partner; therefore, helping the West African country face its security challenges would be an honour.

The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, locked out the workers at the State Secretariat on Wednesday, January 22, after visiting the venue at 10:35 am.

The unexpected visit of the governor prompted the security to lock the gates of the secretariat, leaving out the civil workers who were late to work.

Governor Alia took a tour around the secretariat, checking the facilities as she voiced out her displeasure at the absence of many civil servants, including high-ranking officials.

NNPCL uncovers 179 oil thefts in a week
