PDP accuses INEC of rigging as APC Okpebholo wins Edo State election
The Edo State gubernatorial election, held on Saturday, 21 September, has crowned All Peoples Congress (APC) candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo as the winner.
However, the election is scrutinised by voters and observers who have called out the electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for rigging the polls so APC’s Monday Okpebholo could be named the winner.
Ahmadu Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa State, claimed INEC should be held accountable for the unfair results of the election as it was announced that Monday, Okpebholo had 291,667 votes while PDP’s Asue Ighodalo had 247,274 votes, making him second.
NERC warns of possible price hike for all Band A electricity users
Electricity users on Band A are set to see a new price on their tariff as there has been an increase in electricity subsidies.
According to reports, the federal government’s electricity subsidy has now been raised to ₦181 billion in September 2024 from ₦102 billion in May 2024.
The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) first announced an increase in tariff price back in April 2024 and suggested the removal of subsidy for all Band-A users as the subsidy had risen to ₦140 billion.
Nigeria set to host first African Military Games in November
Nigeria will be hosting its first African Military Games this year in November, recording the participation of 44 African countries who will each be competing for medals.
Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, the Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters and Chairman of the Organising Committee, confirmed the information. He listed the available games: lawn tennis, golf, track and field, combat swimming, obstacle crossing, taekwondo, kickboxing, volleyball, archery, basketball, and many more.
The AVM stated that there would be a total of 19 games to participate in, and they expect all 1,600 participants to bring their A-game to the field where the games will be held in Nigeria.
Tinubu directs the eradication of cybercrime and transnational car theft
President Bola Tinubu has chosen to focus on eradicating cybercrime and transnational car theft in the country as he instructs security and law enforcement agencies to boost their efforts to ensure the safety of Nigerians and the aversion of such crimes in Nigeria.
A statement delivered by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, claims the president had informed the world that Nigeria would not be a haven for illicit wealth from foreign countries.
“To this end, President Bola Tinubu has directed security and law enforcement agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), to intensify efforts in cracking down on individuals in possession of and trafficking in stolen vehicles,” he said.
Local refineries suggest methods to crash petrol sale below ₦600
Local refineries have spoken up about how the petrol price from Dangote in Nigeria can be reduced to ₦600 if the Nigerian government intervened.
The oil refiners have requested that the federal government peg the exchange rate at ₦1,000/$ for the reduction of petrol prices in the country.
