Tinubu vows to strengthen security and unity across Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to achieving sustainable security and preserving national unity amid Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin delivered the president’s message on Tuesday in Abuja at an international conference on national security and socio-economic development organised by JIBWIS Nigeria in partnership with the Muslim World League of Saudi Arabia. He said the government remained focused on tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and communal conflicts.
Jibrin said the conference was timely as Nigeria and other countries continue to face complex security threats. He assured participants that the Federal Government remained committed to strengthening security and promoting stability in Nigeria and beyond.
African airlines reject plans to make passengers pay for security systems
African airlines and aviation industry groups have opposed efforts to make airlines and passengers bear the cost of government-run Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems, insisting that border security remains the responsibility of governments.
The African Airlines Association (AFRAA), Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said they support the introduction of the systems across Africa but warned against imposing extra charges on travellers or carriers to fund them.
API and PNR systems allow governments to collect passenger information before travellers arrive in or depart from a country. The associations said the systems can strengthen border security, support law enforcement, and help identify potential threats while also improving the travel experience for legitimate passengers.
