WAEC results face scrutiny over alleged grading anomalies

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is facing allegations over the integrity of its newly released 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, with some school administrators and education advocates claiming grading inconsistencies and technical problems linked to the expanded Computer-Based Testing (CBT) system.
The concerns emerged after some schools reported that high-performing students received lower grades than expected, given their previous academic records and performance in other standardised examinations. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Director of Impact House Model Schools, Mowe, Ogun State, Sam Abdulazeez, said his school had noticed a decline in students’ WASSCE performance in 2025 and 2026 despite retaining its teachers, improving facilities, and intensifying examination preparations.
Abdulazeez said the school, which has presented candidates for WASSCE since 2017, had historically recorded strong results, particularly in Mathematics and English Language. He recalled that all 45 candidates presented by the school for Mathematics in 2024 obtained A1. However, he said the results changed after the introduction of serialisation and CBT. “This year, out of the 69 children we presented for JAMB, over 30 of them had more than 300 in JAMB. And you know that JAMB is completely CBT,” he said.
Ogogo’s daughters seek help as actor battles stage-four cancer

Two daughters of veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, have appealed for help after revealing that their father is battling stage-four cancer.
The actor’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, made separate emotional appeals on Instagram on Monday, urging Nigerians, well-wishers and medical professionals with experience in cancer treatment to help save their father. In a video shared on her Instagram page, Lima said Ogogo’s condition had deteriorated and that hospitals had reportedly refused to continue treating him.
Holding back tears, she appealed to Nigerians and medical professionals to help the family find a hospital or specialist willing to treat the actor. She stressed that the family was not soliciting financial assistance, but was seeking medical intervention. Lima added that the family only discovered the severity of Ogogo’s condition about three weeks ago, noting that his outward appearance had not reflected how serious his illness was.
Peter Obi donates ₦10m to Grimard College of Nursing Sciences in Kogi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has donated ₦10 million towards the establishment of a Skills Laboratory Centre at Grimard College of Nursing Sciences, Ayingba, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Obi disclosed this in a Facebook post on Sunday following his visit to the institution on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The former Anambra State governor said the donation was part of his continued support for the nursing institution and its efforts to provide quality training for healthcare professionals. He recalled that the college had previously faced a threat to its accreditation due to the lack of a bus for transporting students to clinical placements.
Obi said his intervention at the time led to the provision of a school bus, enabling the institution to retain its accreditation and continue training nurses and other healthcare professionals. He said the latest donation would support the establishment of a skills laboratory at the college and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting its management, staff and students. He also urged the students to remain focused on their studies, describing nursing as a profession with broad opportunities in Nigeria and abroad.

Davido says he is done with Nigerian politics, calls it ‘evil’

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, says he is no longer interested in Nigerian politics, describing the political system as “evil”.
The 33-year-old singer made the comment on X while reacting to a post by Dayo Israel, the All Progressives Congress (APC) national youth leader, who listed factors he believed contributed to the party’s defeat in the Osun State governorship election. Davido’s uncle and Accord candidate, Ademola Adeleke, won the election with 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Najeem Salaam came third with 17,180 votes.
Israel had credited Davido with helping to mobilise young people, artistes and influencers during the campaign by using his music, digital reach and personal influence. However, Davido denied bringing artistes or influencers into Osun to influence the election, saying he supported his family without the backing of colleagues in the entertainment industry. He added that he no longer wants to be involved in the Nigerian political landscape until “God help us”.
