Traditional ruler provides alternative to the proposed toll gates

A royal father in Lagos, HRM Oba Oladele Friday Kosoko, the Onoworo of Iworo and Ogundeyi 11, has warned against wastage of taxpayers’ money.

Why it matters: The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola had said the FG has concluded plans to reintroduce toll gates at 38 points across Nigeria.

Highlights:

  • As reported by The Nation on Saturday, he said that it would be better for the federal government to shelve the idea of the toll plaza and consider alternative means of funding road maintenance in the country.

What impact do you think mere 38 road plazas in the country would make?” he queried, explaining that an alternative, like the sale of stickers, in the form of Road Maintenance Tax, will fund road maintenance better, instead of this inconsistent policy of construction and demolition of toll plazas.

If all cars in the country buy the sticker for about three thousand Naira, buses at a slightly higher price, tricycle and Okada at very affordable prices, the country can get about N300 billion per annum for road maintenance,” the traditional ruler said.
