WMD 2015: Mortein champions the cause to defeat Malaria in Nigeria

As part of activities to mark this year’s World Malaria Day (WMD), RB Nigeria Limited, makers of number one insect-killer Brand, Mortein has strengthened partnership with the Lagos State Government and other stakeholders to eliminate malaria in Nigeria.

To commemorate World Malaria Day 2015 in Lagos State and re-emphasize its commitment to defeating Malaria in Nigeria, Mortein went all out with a community engagement session, free Malaria testing in 15 locations pan-Nigeria and the presentation of baby hampers and one year supply of Mortein to World Malaria Day babies.

The community engagement programme which held at Palm Avenue, Mushin saw officials from the Lagos state Ministry of Health and RB team carry out cleaning of the environment and clearing of waste and drainages in the area. They also went round the community to sensitize and educate residents on the immense benefits of maintaining clean environment which studies have shown to be one of the most effective ways to reduce mosquitoes which majorly causes Malaria.

Speaking at the event, Category Manager, Pest care, Health care, Air care, RB West Africa, Qaiser Rashid, said the community engagement was part of numerous corporate social responsibility initiatives by RB Nigeria ltd. to stem the prevalence of malaria scourge in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

He said the partnership with the Lagos State Government, which has been on-going for years, also demonstrates the company’s commitment to the anti-malaria fight in the state.

Qaiser added that Mortein has always been in the fore front of the fight against malaria with different initiatives aimed at empowering mothers who are care givers to the most vulnerable group – children under 5 years.

“Part of our initiatives to eradicate malaria in Nigeria is the Mortein anti-malaria education programme which components include the New Mum Programme and community outreaches. Through the New Mum Programme, Mortein targets to reach over 500,000 mums this year alone”, he said.

Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Dr. Olajide Idris, represented by Deputy Director, Disease control, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Rotimi Agbolagorite in his address said this year’s World Malaria Day commemoration aims at drawing significant attention to the additional effort required in achieving the targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015.

He further expressed appreciation to Reckitt Benckiser, Mushin Local Government and other stake holders for their initiatives and efforts towards the fight against malaria in Lagos State.
