FEC bids goodbye to seven exiting members

by Laila Ibrahim

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday held a valedictory session for serving ministers and members of the cabinet who are aspiring for gubernatorial positions in their various states.

At the session coordinated by ‎President Goodluck Jonathan in the council chambers, of the Presidential Villa, Abuja seven ministers were listed by President Jonathan as those expected to leave to pursue their political ambitions.

According to him, the Ministers for Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, State Niger Delta, Darius Ishaqu, State Trade and Investment, Samuel Ortom, State Education, Nyesom Wike, Information, Labaran Maku, Labour, Emeka Wogu and State Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro have all indicated their intentions to opt for gubernatorial positions.

The President however maintained that since they have not formally written to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim indicating their interests to resign they will still be seen as council members.

Explaining further, the President said, the valedictory session had only arisen on the grounds that they had indicated their interests informally and on the party regulations that anyone with such ambitions must leave their current appointment before the 20ths of this month which inadvertently means for those nursing such ambitions, “this meeting is definitely their last of FEC sessions”.

The president had also warned those who have not really perfected their plans against writing, endorsing and submitting a resignation letter as any letter received from them by the SGF will be treated forthwith without further consideration.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, Power Minister, Chinedu Nebo ‎praised the ministers and prayed for the fulfilment of their ambitions and the entrenchment of what they had garnered in their tutelage in the hands of the president in the course of duties in their new areas of calling.

Maku who spoke on behalf of the outgoing ministers, showered encomium on the president over his steadfastness, focus and integrity.

He maintained that non of them lobby for their jobs as cabinet members, urged Jonathan not to be distracted by the opposition and people who compulsively speak ills of his administration.

Noting that the president is the only one that had since the time of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon entrenched stability in the council by not sacking or replacing council members regularly, a common practice in the past that never encouraged development.

Meanwhile, some ministers including that of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed had a change of mind after being touted as nursing gubernatorial ambitions in their states. They were as such not listed amongst the seven who informally requested to exit the FEC. The others include; State Minister, Finance, Bashir Yuguda and his Special Duties counterpart, Taminu Turaki.
