12 universities and over 120 students receive grants in Etisalat Merit Awards program [PHOTOS]

Etisalat is underscoring its commitment to sustainable development through education by awarding grants to over 120 Nigerian university undergraduates with its Merit Awards initiative with the aim of rewarding and encouraging academic excellence amongst Nigerian undergraduates.

The Award celebrates Nigerian university students with the highest CGPA in the departments of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Management Sciences. There are also two special categories – the Indigenes’ award for the best performing students from the respective universities’ locations, and a newly introduced award for most academically excellent students with physical challenges.

The first phase of the awards took place recently when the grants were awarded to undergraduates from the University of Lagos; Federal University of Technology, Akure; University of Ibadan and Ambrose Alli University at the regional presentation ceremony of the 2016 Etisalat Merit Awards in Ibadan.

The Director, Regulatory and Corporate Social Responsibility, Etisalat Nigeria, Ikenna Ikeme, said “the Merit Award initiative is a proof of Etisalat’s commitment to sustainable development.

Other institutions that will benefit from this programme in the next phase are – are Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State; Akwa Ibom State University; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; Benue State University; Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa State; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State; Bayero University, Kano and Usmanu Dan Fodio University, Sokoto.

Over 1600 scholarships have been awarded under the Merit Awards Scheme since inception, and it gets better this year as Etisalat has increased the grant from N100, 000 to N200, 000 to enable students achieve more academic success with the grants.
