68 MASSOB members arrested for celebrating Biafra Day

68 members of Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, have been arrested by the Imo state police command for unlawful assemblage and procession.

Their arrest was disclosed on Monday, June 1, by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Austin Evbakhavbokun.

He said: “62 of the figure arrested had been charged to court for conspiracy, belonging to unlawful society and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.”

According to the Commissioner, investigations revealed that the leader of the movement, Chief Ralph Uwazurike, was not associated with the group.

Evbakhavbokun said the apprehended freedom fighters had stormed Owerri, Imo state capital in buses from all directions to celebrate Biafra Day and remembrance of their fallen heroes without previous notice to the police.

The commissioner said: “They were clad in MASSOB/Biafra uniforms with varying insignia and marched towards the Port Harcourt-Owerri federal highway, chanting war songs in such a manner as to cause breach of the peace. They were, however, dispersed by the State Police Command.”

He revealed that exhibits recovered from the suspects include: Biafra uniforms, Biafra ID cards, Biafra flags and some buses.

“We have just one country called Nigeria and we cannot have two flags for the same country,” the commissioner added.
