7,629 ‘ghost workers’ discovered in Kano state

The Kano State Government, on Tuesday, announced the discovery of 7,629 ghost workers during the course of the ongoing biometrics verification of civil workers in the state.

According to the Head of Service of the state, Muhammad Na’iya, the discovery will save over N283.5 million for the state on a monthly basis.

Na’iya revealed the discovery in a chat with journalists in Kano on Tuesday, April 12 where he also stated that the fake workers are to be deleted from the government’s payroll this April.

“We have given them ample time to appear before the verification committee but they failed to do so. This is something we started in February and we are now in April. So we cannot continue to pay workers that are not in existence.”

Furthermore, Na’iya said the state also found 17 newly-recruited workers who had been receiving double salaries which amounted to N1.01 million every month.

He stated that the new recruits would soon be prosecuted and sent away from the civil service.

“After the exercise, all those found to be involved in the shady deal will be prosecuted, in addition to recovering the money.”

The HOS explained that the verification exercise was initiated by the government to have in place, a robust, integrated and comprehensive human resource and payment data base.

“In this interim exercise, a total of 86, 373 civil servants have so far been captured out of the over 150, 000 workers that are on the government’s payroll,” Na’iya added.
