8 other times Aisha Buhari has spoken her mind – clearly

She has been in the news for the better part of the week and you know why.

But this is not a sudden eruption by a woman who is acting strangely.

Do you remember all the other times Mrs Buhari has been in the spotlight (for lack of a better word)? You don’t?

We do because we have been watching her from the sides of our eyes siiiiiince. We have watched her drop hints of the real woman that resides in that body.

Here are 8 other times that Aisha Buhari has spoken her mind before now:

1. I am not your First Lady

FIRST LADYSJune 13th 2015, at the appreciation dinner held in honour of the new Buhari-led administration, Mrs Buhari wasted no time speaking up against what she wants and doesn’t want. We can all admit that one of the most authoritative things a person can do at a first meeting is to be vocal about how they like to be addressed. So when she said:

“I am not the first Lady. I am the wife of the President and will be addressed as such going forward.”

We knew.

2. A different kind of feminism

aisha-buhari-behind-husbandAt a programme recently organised in Abuja by the SHE Forum Africa with the theme: Regroup, Reboot and Remove the Mask, Mrs Aisha Buhari’s speech contained some remarkable feminist statements. Although directed to female leaders who she charged to be responsible to the younger generation, the words apply across board. According to her:

“As women and mothers of the nation, the faith of the next generation of both girls and boys occupies much of my thinking. To achieve gender inclusion, the world must break up and pay attention to the rights and opportunities of all human beings to reach and live up to their full potentials.”

We feel extremely sad now that it took this messy situation for us to see the depth of in these words.

3. On suicide bombings

Aisha Buhari expressed her lack of understanding of the idea of suicide bombings back in July, 2014 when her husband’s convoy was attacked. According to her:

“I never believed that one can kill himself to kill another person in Nigeria,” she said. “I have heard of suicide bombers in Nigeria, but I never believed until the attack on my husband yesterday. It is scary, The experience was traumatising.”

4. Calling out cibil servants

Just on Monday, she raised her voice against the extortion of rural women in the ongoing distribution of forms for women empowerment by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.

In a statement made available by Adebisi Olumide-Ajayi, her media aide, the wife of the President called out the civil servants who were charging the rural women fees ranging between NGN 1500 and NGN 5000 for the women empowerment forms that we designed to be distributed free of charge.

5. Swift against child abuse

Boy-chained-by-dadAgain, not one to say much to the press, we learnt about her active interest in Korede, the 9 year-old who was chained in a celestial church in Ogun State through Olufunsho Amosun.

According to Mrs Amosun, Aisha Buhari took an active interest in Korede’s case even before it was announced in the papers and might have been interested in adopting the boy.

6. Speaking frankly about IDPs

1a3Even before it became a big deal in Nigeria, Aisha Buhari was already speaking her mind about the issues of maltreatment of those in IDP camps and as usual, it was not to the local media.

On her famous trip to the U.S where she spoke only with the Voice of America, she also had talks with officials of the United States Institute for Peace one of the organisations sending aid to the camps.

She noted that the United Nations International Children Fund (UNICEF) had been providing aid packages containing nut-related supplements, which, she said, are produced in large quantities by Nigerian farmers. So she told them that if they really wanted to help, they’d set up plants in Nigeria and save the 6-8 weeks shipping time they were wasting in transporting the items.

7. Legal response

It is apparent that this is a woman who only uses her words when she really needs or wants to. But it doesn’t mean that she lets everything else slide unaddressed.

When troublemaker governor, Ayo Fayose decided to run his trailer in her direction, she wasted no time in suing him for his wrong allegations against her.

She didn’t just leave it to the courts though. Speaking about it, she told reporters that she sued Fayose because he had made false allegations against her  – and she was not having it.

“I did not run for president. I am a married woman and I have never called his name. I never knew him. But as governor and chief executive, he kept insulting and raising false allegations against me, I have to respond and I decided to go to court.

“He made allegations over what he said I did here in the US, even though I have never met the people he mentioned.”

Fayose X Aisha Buhari8. Finally, the infamous “mad dog” statement you know and have been waiting for:

“Enough is Enough Fayose. A mad dog that isn’t chained. I refuse to keep quiet. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH FAYOSE IS AN UNCHAINED MAD DOG! If Buhari is 73 years old, I Aisha am 45 years old, I have more than enough energy to face you.”

Safe to say these were Aisha Buhari’s most famous words until this week.

When Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti State wasn’t going to shut it and kept going on about how she had been indicted in the “Jefferson” Halliburton scandal, Mrs Buhari took to her Twitter to respond in kind.

Aisha buhari

She deleted it. But the words live forever in our hearts.

Ride on, madam. We are sure there is more from the fiery place where all of these came from.
