60 persons killed in Nice, France, after truck drove through a crowd

About 60 persons have died in Nice, France, on Thursday, after a truck drove into a crowd, leaving several persons injured and killed after a Bastille Day fireworks display.

According to locals, the driver of the truck was shot dead after he drove into the crowd of people on the palm-lined Promenade des Anglais.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet and it is unknown whether it is a terror attack or not. However, France has been the target of terror attacks in the past few months leading to a state of emergency being declared in the country.

“We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around,” said an AFP reporter who witnessed the white truck driving at high speed onto the seaside road. “Hundreds of terrified pedestrians screamed as they fled the area. It was absolute chaos.”

Nice prosecutor, Jean-Michel Pretre, has confirmed that at least 60 persons were killed after the truck reportedly drove 1.3 mile through the crowd of people.

France successfully hosted the Euro 2016 football championship without an incident.
