The Director General of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Ms. Julie Okah-Donli has called the attention of all Nigerians to the activities of traffickers who now hawk human parts for sale – including but not limited to kidneys and livers.
According to NAPTIP “Nigeria is a source, transit, and destination country. Women and young girls are recruited for sexual and labour exploitation in parts of Europe, the Middle-East and even on the African continent. The new dimension and most frightening now is the harvesting of organs and vital human parts for sale by traffickers. Nobody is safe. This calls for a concerted action by all, as Nigeria cannot make meaningful progress in its human capital development index, with a sustained depletion of her young and brightest minds. Our inaction or denial will not only accelerate the frightening dimension of this crime but also make the menace protracted.”
This revelation is timely as it will serve as a wake-up call to parents that are fond of releasing their wards to traffickers for money and other incentives. Security agencies and those manning our borders too are advised to safeguard the territory from human parts traffickers.
