The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to reduce petrol prices, introduce a nationwide wage award and begin negotiations for a new minimum wage, citing the rising cost of living.
In an Independence Day statement signed by its president, Joe Ajaero, the union blamed soaring transport, food, rent and education costs for eroding workers’ purchasing power. It noted that petrol sells for ₦1,430 per litre or more in major cities.
The NLC also called for improved public education, healthcare, roads and employment opportunities, urging the government to ease household pressures and give young Nigerians reasons to remain in the country.

The refinery is expected to generate 1,000 megawatts of electricity, produce petrochemicals and supply jet fuel to international markets. Dangote also plans to establish a training school for 1,000 Kenyan engineering graduates.
Ruto described the project as an investment in energy security, industrialisation and regional integration, while Dangote said it would create jobs and support businesses across several industries.
