A Bob Marley biopic is on its way – and we are wondering why it took so long

Some things should have since been brought into existence. For example: a Bob Marley biopic. But thankfully, Ziggy Marley has stepped up to the plate and the universe has righted itself. Last week, Deadline reported that Ziggy and Paramount Pictures are developing a biopic on his father Bob Marley, the musical icon who brought reggae into the mainstream.

Marley died of cancer at the age of 36 in 1982 and, in that short lifetime, he changed the music landscape by introducing generations to reggae music with hit songs as Get Up, Stand Up, Love No Woman, No Cry, Redemption Song, among others.

Ziggy Marley is a successful musician in his own right as well as a producer. Ziggy’s early immersion in music came at 10 years old, when he sat in on recording sessions with his Dad. He also produced the video Bob Marley & The Wailers: Easy Skanking in Boston ‘78 and was an executive producer on the documentaries Bob Marley Legend Remixed, Marley, and Marley Africa Roadtrip. He has also guest-starred on some TV shows including Charmed and Hawaii Five-O.

This biopic, when it comes out, could be a cultural thesis on biracial entity and the discrimination Bob Marley faced pre-and-post stardom. He was from a mixed black mother and white father, and that in itself became problematic but young Bob soon transcended his peculiar racial configuration and brought people together through his music. And while we await more development on the film, can we get J Cole to play Bob Marley?
