All about saving lives – October is Breast Cancer awareness month

by Wilfred Okiche

The month of October of every year is celebrated as Breast Cancer awareness month. In this month, activities to raise awareness of the disease and money for research and management for people who suffer from it take centre stage.

The first Race for the cure of Breast Cancer was held in October 1983 and about 800 people participated. Since then, October has been chosen as the month for breast cancer awareness.

The Pink Ribbon, the world wide symbol for Breast Cancer awareness was created by the Estee Lauder Company in 1993.

The Estee Lauder companies have illuminated various world famous landmarks like the White House, Tokyo Towers and Niagara falls in pink light to draw attention to the cause.

To support the campaign, people are encouraged to wear pink or host pink-themed parties throughout the month of October.
