Arabic studies: Kumuyi, Adeboye, Oyedepo, others ask students to boycott classes

The General Overseers of the  Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye; The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo; Living Faith Church,  Bishop David Oyedepo; Deeper Life Church, Pastor WF Kumuyi among others, have ordered Christian students across the country to boycott Arabic Studies amid reports that the subject was made compulsory.

Also present at the meeting were Rev. (Dr.) Mercy Ezekiel, the National Coordinator of Christian Pentecostal Mission (CPM), Pastor Wale Oke and the General Overseer of the Thronegrace Mission, Pastor Emmanuel Nuhu Kure.

They also called  for immediate reversal of  the revised Basic Education Curriculum, especially the  collapse of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) as part of an omnibus subject known as Religion and National Values, and maintained that CRS should stand on its own as a separate subject just as it has always been.

According to Vanguard, they criticised the move to impose Arabic Studies on every secondary school student in the country, stating that the Federal Government has no right to force any Nigerian student at any level to study Arabic Studies.

They said that the proviso in the revised curriculum that every student must take either French or Arabic Studies compulsorily in a country where French teachers are scarce was an attempt to impose Arabic Studies on Christian students.

Articulating the position of the Fellowship, Omobude, who is also the PFN National President, Oyedepo, Okonkwo and Wale Oke urged Christian students in any part of the country to resist such imposition, stressing that “we are aware of orchestrated plans to subtly use this policy as a means of forceful religious indoctrination and we maintain our stand against it.”

“Government has no right to force subjects on any any Nigerian child neither does it have the authority to drop Christian Religious Studies at the Senior Secondary School level while asking him/her to continue to read Islamic Studies which he/she cannot do at university level,” Oyedepo said, emphasising that by stopping CRS, automatically meant that it would not be embraced at the tertiary institutions.

Citing a case in Kwara State where a Christian female student was allegedly beaten and forced to take Arabic Studies against her wish, Omobude expressed concern at the contention and controversy that have attended the revised Basic Education Curriculum, especially the unnecessary collapse of CRS as part of an omnibus subject known as Religion and National Values.

  1. The question is, were they forced to take the Bible studies? If yes, what are they doing in Christian school. Secondly, to be frank, Osinbajo is more sound and a better driver than Buhari. It may be because he is by far more educated and intelligent. Lastly, the Pastors, CAN, others need to research well about this matter. Both IRS, CRS, and others will be place under Civic Education. Will make this 2 compulsory accordingly, else, French.

  2. You see how hypocrite we are in this country. My sister’s children who are muslim have been receiving bible sudies at their various school in Abuja and they were even given assignment which they brought for me to do for them yesterday, yet these people did not see anything wrong in that. I have said it time without number that tthe problem of this country is religion, religion and religion which shows itself during the last general election. I dont know why we always add religious colouration to every issues in this part of the world. The same thing is playing out now since Prof Osinbajo takes over as acting president, virtually everybody commending him are Christians saying he has done well forgetting in a hurry that it was joint ticket between him and PMB, the same people who once claimed that PMB was not performing. May Allah deliver us. Ameeen

  3. For crying our loud, this is not true. Can we all make out time to find out the true position of this matter. The restructure of the syllabus affects both subjects equally. Why do we promote animosity at the slightest opportunity. This bitterness is counter productive.

  9. When we told you guys Buhari was an Islamic fanatic did you believed us then? Now you all can see the bold handwriting on the board. From Muslims services security chief to total eradication of Christian Religion Knowledge (C.R.K) in educational syllabus meanwhile Islamic Religion Knowledge (I.R.K) or Arabic Study is in our educational syllables. Intended reintroduction of Arabic language in our currencies and many more. Systematic Islamizing of Nigeria on the way. Hello Nigerians…

  10. Things that doesn’t put food on anyone’s table, confusion in governance.

  11. Is Arabic our official language? Then the Muslim student should learn Hebrew and Greek languages too
