Benue police arrest men with large cache of arms

Vigilant policemen in Okpokwu Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State yesterday arrested fifteen suspects and impounded a vehicle reportedly loaded with weapons belonging to a Peoples’ Democratic Party local government chairmanship aspirant in the party’s rescheduled ward congress.

The PDP ward congress has been postponed several times due to the tension generated by politicians jostling for election in the ward congress.

The police intercepted a Toyota Corolla car about 9am making its way to the venue of the congress and arrested its occupants who are reported to be affiliated with the local government chairmanship aspirant. The vehicle was impounded and parked at the Okpokwu Police Divisional Headquarters.

Observers say the political tension in the area was generated by the insistence of a top party leader to allow only 600 delegates from each of the 13 wards to participate in the ward congress instead of a general exercise of franchise which is guaranteed in the PDP guideline.

The minister of Interior, Comrade Abbas Moro hails from Okpokwu local government area.

The deputy public relations officer of the Benue State Police Command, ASP Ejike Alaribe confirmed the arrest of 15 suspects yesterday in the area but did not elaborate on the reported cache of arms discovered.

He said, “What I can tell you is that some persons were arrested with exhibits but nobody has told me anything about arms and ammunition.”

The arrested suspects have been transferred to the Benue State Police Command Headquarters in Makurdi, the state capital, for investigations and possible prosecution.
