A GOP official has angered quite a few advocacy groups by comparing an Obama supporter to someone who is mentally retarded.  At a function for state Rep. Randy Vulakovich (R-Shaler), Allegheny County GOP chair Jim Roddey made a joke that had the audience laughing.

“There was a disappointment tonight. I was very embarrassed,” Roddey told the crowd, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I was in this parking lot and there was a man looking for a space to park, and I found a space for him. And I felt badly — he looked like he was sort of in distress. And I said, ‘Sir, here’s a place.’ And he said, ‘That’s a handicapped space.’ I said, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry, I saw that Obama sticker and I thought you were mentally retarded.’”

According to Post-Gazette reporter Tim McNulty, the crowd loved the joke and clapped heartily in response.

Some are saying that the joke was insensitive for obvious reasons.  While the joke is certainly not an indictment of the entire Republican Party, it is certainly the kind of language that no one should be proud of.  There is no reaction from the party as of yet.
