Former Nigerian international striker, Rashidi Yekini, was reported dead earlier this evening Friday, 4 May, 2012.
The striker, famed for his prolific goal scoring for the Nigerian international football team , is being buried in his home town this Saturday.
He will be remembered for his remarkable showing at the World Cup in 1994, where he was controversially picked for the international team and was deemed too old by many at 31. Instead he went on to score the country’s first ever goal at the World Cup, and the moment was captured in an iconic picture as he hugged the goal net.
He also won African Footballer of the Year twice and rightly so; he made 58 appearances for the country and scored 37 goals. He played for both local and international teams, making waves in Portugal.
Rest in Peace.
