British govt in support of a united Nigeria – Envoy

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, has said his country does not support the break-up of Nigeria.

He spoke during a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Kwara State House of Assembly in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Friday.

Arkwright said the UK government had supported and would continue to support the unity of Nigeria.

He described as false any claim that the United Kingdom was interested in the dissolution of Nigeria.

Arkwright said, “We have nothing to do with any agitation and acts to break up Nigeria. We strongly support the unity of Nigeria. We strongly support the Federal Government and that is the position that the British Government has held consistently.

“We have absolutely no interest in the agitation for the break-up of Nigeria and anybody who claims the British and the British government are involved in any way, is completely wrong.

“The percentage of women in politics is low. So, anything you can do to encourage women in politics and civil society, I will welcome that.

“I was very keen to see the House of Assembly and the members here. I feel strongly that sometimes in this country, democracy is for the delegates. It is great to see a House of Assembly that is operating in the true spirit of democracy, representing the people here.”
