Building new habits take time | The Daily Vulnerable

The Daily Vulnerable

Chude Jideonwo

Seven years ago, I had a bad habit.

Whenever I was lonely, I reached out to people on BBM. I reached out to people on Instagram. I reached out to people I wasn’t supposed to reach out to; people that were not good for me, people that will make me feel bad about myself. A habit I had to unlearn.

Today, I don’t have any chat app except for iMessage on my phone. People often ask why this is.

Seven years ago, I said to myself: “Chude, you need to deal with this habit.” The first thing I did was delete WhatsApp, and BBM. There is nothing wrong with these tools but for myself. Slowly, when I feel this loneliness, I don’t reach out to just anyone. I call my friends, and then slowly, it stopped being a part of my life. People who know me for the past few years may call it radical, but to create healthy habits to deal with loneliness, I had to follow my process every day.

One of the finest speakers I’ve met, Simon Sinek, says there is no one day where your teeth decay. If you stop brushing your teeth, you can’t say that your teeth will fall out on the 15th day of the month. But one day, it will fall out.

It’s the same thing with building a good habit. Do not wait for a date to start practicing a habit or replacing another habit. Don’t postpone action for another day. Rather, start today and follow through day after day. You have to be patient with yourself to become the person that doesn’t do loneliness, and doesn’t do the things I used to do 7 years ago.

Remember, it took me 7 years of building that habit day by day.
