Be very afraid: Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau says Gwoza is no longer part of Nigeria

In a video obtained by AFP on Sunday, 24 August, Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, said he has created an Islamic caliphate in Gwoza, southern Borno.

In the 52-minute video, Shekau said, “Thanks be to Allah who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate. By the grace of Allah we will not leave the town. We have come to stay,”

He also went ahead to proclaim that Gwoza, which the Islamic sect seized earlier this month, now has nothing to do with Nigeria.

Boko Haram is also believed to be in control of several other areas near Gwoza, while they also recently captured the town of Buni Yadi, in neighbouring Yobe state.
