Close shave: Attempt to bomb mosque averted in Kano

by Stanley Azuakola

In Kano State on Friday, what would have been a terrible tragedy was averted, thanks to the watchfulness of ordinary Nigerians. Four men were arrested by men of the Kano State Police Command while trying to plant a bomb at the Waje Friday mosque in Fagge Local Government Area of the state.

The men had concealed the explosives in a polythene bag and brought it into the premises of the mosque just before the Friday Juma’at prayers. However, some of the worshippers at the mosque noticed their actions and immediately alerted the police.

The police immediately swung into action, arresting all four suspects around 1.30pm.

Juma’at prayers were however interrupted thereafter as the Muslim faithful hurriedly left the mosque upon hearing the news.

The spokesman of the police in Kano State, DSP Rilwan Mohammad who confirmed the arrest in a press statement, thanked the people of Kano for the useful information they had given to the police. He said security has been beefed around the area.

“The suspects are now in our custody and the bomb has since been defused by our bomb disposal experts,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident.
