CNN sends sketch artist to White House briefing in place of banned cameras

CNN sent its regular sketch artist for Supreme Court proceedings the White House, Friday for Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s afternoon briefing.

Bill Hennessy drew the briefing the back of the briefing room to document the scene. The network gave permission to other media and news outlets to use, CNN has equated the White House daily press briefing to a Supreme Court argument, an on-the-record event at which cameras are banned.

The idea is to paint a picture for viewers who were not in the room since cameras have been banned from the daily briefings.

Press secretaries for Democratic and Republican presidents have held on-camera briefings on a regular basis for the past quarter century but Trump’s administration has cut back on these briefings banning video and allowing only audio coverage.

In June, there have been only four on camera press briefings by Press Secretary Sean Spicer and his deputy Sarah  Huckabee Sanders. When asked on Friday about the restriction of access. “Some days we’ll do it” on camera, he said. “I think it’s great for us to come out here and have a substantive discussion about policies. I don’t think that the be all and end all is whether it’s on television or not.”
