“There is no money to buy fuel to power generators” | NBC staff under Lai Mohammed cry out

Nigerians are still talking about leak of a memo from Lai Mohammed to the NBC requesting for N13 million loan to travel to China for tourism promotion.

Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture had sent a memo to the National Broadcasting Commission asking to be given the said funds for his journey- to China (a place every Nigerian politician seems to be obsessed with at the moment).

Lai Mohammed’s ministry has launched an investigation to determine who made the leak to online news platform SaharaReporters from the NBC office according to Punch Newspaper.

In effect of the investigation, some officials of the finance department of the NBC were invited on Friday, May 13 to the headquarters of the ministry at Radio House, Abuja to come and confess what they know of the leak.

Meanwhile, according to Punch, while Lai Mohammed keeps requesting for funds from the NBC, the regulatory agency has been suffering from an acute shortage of funds.

Since assumption of office in November 2015, Lai Mohammed is said to have requested for money 3 times from the NBC.

A member of staff of the NBC told Punch that “Security men at NBC have not been paid since January. The last time they were paid, the contractor was asked to source for money and be refunded later.

“There is no money to buy fuel to power the generators, yet requests for funding keep coming from the minister.”

Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Segun Adeyemi has been largely unreachable since the memo was made public while Chief Press Secretary to the Minister, Joseph Mutah said the official reply of the ministry was on its way.

However, considering that the fiasco is directly in the yard of the Ministry of Information and no official response has been issued almost 72 hours after gives an insight into how unprofessional, lacklustre and uninspiring the said ministry is!
