Edo tracker: APGA wants election shifted to Independence Day

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has called for a further postponement of the Edo state governorship election.

The party’s candidate for the governorship election, Osaro Onaiwu, wants the exercise shifted to October 1.

He made the call on Monday in Benin, the Edo state capital, while speaking with journalists.

Onaiwu said a further shift was necessary because September 28 was the day students taking the General Certificate of Education across the country would write Physics.

He said that October 1 was the “earliest possible date” for the election.

Onaiwu said that the shift would afford eligible voters among the students to participate in the election.

According to him, education is the number one pillar in APGA’s manifesto, and the authorities must be wary of threats from some of the students that they will sue INEC if they are‎ prevented from voting in the election.

The APGA candidate said the claim by the PDP that it would win had the election not be postponed was a mere presumption.

He criticised the PDP for insisting that the election should have been allowed to go on.

He said, “Are we going to wait for what happened in Rivers? PDP is crying because they know what we don’t know.

“Since security agencies said the election was not possible and INEC has shifted it, everybody should abide,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday announced the postponement of the election fixed for Saturday, September 10, to September 28 after it received a security report from the Department of State Services and Police on Wednesday.
