The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has appealed a court order to unfreeze a Skye Bank account belonging to a former first lady, Patience Jonathan.

“We have appealed the order,” spokesman for the Commission, Wilson Uwujaren, told Premium Times in an interview.

Last Thursday, the Federal High Court in Lagos directed the anti-graft agency to unfreeze the account, which is believed to contain about $5.8 million (about N1.8 billion).

In November 2016, the EFCC approached the court, seeking an order freezing the account.

According to the commission, the funds were suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Uwujaren said the EFCC “served a notice of stay” of execution of the order on Skye Bank.
