#EkitiDecides: 5 journalists arrested by security operatives in Ekiti

by S’ola Filani

The Ekiti governorship elections is well underway and so far, the conduct has been  peaceful. There have, however, been reports of assault and indiscriminate arrests by security forces who are said to be in their hundreds.

These security operatives include men of the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and others. Security is reportedly tight so as to prevent a breakdown in law and order among the supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Gov. Kayode Fayemi and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenger, former governor Ayo Fayose.

Five journalists, Jadesola Ajibola of Inspiration FM, Toyin Yusuf, Oyetunji Ojo, Akin Ogunsola, and Aremu Awolola, all of Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) have reportedly been arrested by mobile policemen.

The journalists were monitoring and reporting the governorship election in the state when they were arrested by a group of over 50 mobile policemen led by a Mobile Police Commander.

The reason for their arrest is unknown at the time of filing this report.

A YNaija.com reporter was assaulted by a military personnel earlier today while covering the accreditation process of the ongoing election.
