Explosives diversion: FG recalls federal mines workers

Following the arrest of five security operatives over diversion of explosives to militants, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has recalled all federal mines officers in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal capital territory.

The Office of the National Security Adviser had revealed on Thursday that militants and vandals get explosives used in wreaking havoc from security operatives, who illegally divert them.

A statement by the Special Assistant on Media to the minister, Yinka Oyebode, said the recall of the mines officers was aimed at strengthening the institutional capacity of the ministry to cooperate with the security agencies in ensuring the security of lives and property in the country, as well as safety of the environment.

“All the affected officers are to report to the headquarters of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Abuja for further directives,” the statement said.

Fayemi was quoted as saying, “In the pursuit of our mandate to deepen the productivity of the mining industry, we will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to guarantee that the security of lives and property, as well as safety of the environment is not compromised.”
