In its bid to contribute its own effort at relieving Puerto Ricans of the suffered damage as a result of Hurricane Maria, Facebook is sending employees to help restore communications in Puerto Rico.
CEO of the tech giant, Mark Zuckerberg in a post announcing the company’s effort said: “We’re working to get Puerto Rico back online. We’re sending the Facebook connectivity team to deliver emergency telecommunications assistance to get the systems up and running.”
According to a Federal Communications Commission report on Wednesday, over 91 percent of the cell towers on the island are still not in service.
Zuckerberg in addition said that Facebook will support relief efforts by donating $1.5 million to NetHope, a group that links tech experts with humanitarian organizations, and the United Nation’s World Food Programme, coupled with a provision the allows organisations run ads free of charge that will help people in Puerto Rico get information on how to stay safe and get assistance.
Complementing the existing relief operations, Pentagon said it is ramping up aide and restoration efforts, including the establishment of a military headquarters and increased food and water delivery to the island.
Puerto Rico has been left in a state of extreme devastation after it suffered a huge strike by two Hurricanes in three weeks i.e Hurricane Irma and the most recent Hurricane Maria.
