FCT will soon have a Mayor

A member of the House of Representatives, Jisalo Zephaniah, has said a Mayoral office will be created for the original inhabitants of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) soon.

According to The Daily Trust the lawmaker representing Bwari/AMAC constituency of the FCT said the mayoral office is to be incorporated in a bill on the integration development commission for the FCT.

He said the bill was to help original indigenes of the FCT have a sense of belonging.

Jisalo made the remark on Tuesday at the occasion of the International World Indigenous Peoples Day celebration orgainsed by the Coalition of FCT Indigenous Groups.

“We are also sponsoring a bill to create the office of the mayor of the FCT because we need it. What I have done is amend Section 299 to create the office of the mayor but let me say that that notwithstanding, the governor of the FCT would continue to appoint his minister for the FCT,” he said.
“The National Assembly has agreed to pass this law because it has gone for second reading; the matter has been referred to constitution amendment committee,” he said and appealed for the support of other representatives to ensure that the bill was passed.
The Senator representing the FCT, Philip Aduda, said government should consider integrating the natives if resettling and compensation could not be possible.
While making a case for integration, he said resettling the natives came with physiological trauma that could not be cured with money.
