Did the FEC meeting not hold because of a missing memo or because of a missing President?

If you have not been following closely, you may have missed the fact that the weekly Federal Executive Council meetings that President Buhari usually heads has had a few glitches recently.

Actually, it’s not only the FEC meeting that has met with glitches since President Buhari got back from his medical vacation in March, but that’s a whole different business.

[Oops! The President did not just admit his own incompetence. Or did he?]

Well, back to the FEC meetings. Last week, President Buhari was absent at the meeting and before the end of the day, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed had an explanation for us. According to him, the President was absent at the meeting last week because the agenda was light. He said the president looked at the agenda and figured it was so light he’d rather attend to “other issues” and so he got the Vice-President to preside over it.

Nigerians were too busy with other issues to be bothered so there were hardly any raised eyebrows over last week’s development.

Over the course of the past week, we have seen Vice President Osinbajo take up more and more responsibilities, the latest being the investigation of the allegations against the SGF, Babachir Lawal and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ayo Oke who were both suspended today.

[Catch up: President Buhari has suspended SGF Babachir Lawal and DG, NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke]

Given these circumstances, to hear that the President was not the only one absent at this week’s meeting but that the meeting did not even hold at all! Well, we cannot help our curious selves anymore!

Even though the Senior Special Assistant to the President on media, Garba Shehu has tried to explain this development away, saying that the memos for the meeting were not delivered on time because of the Easter Holidays – LOL – it still feels very odd that the one thing the President has to show up for just once a week has faced these setbacks twice consecutively.

[Catch up: Countdown to Buhari’s return: Have you been counting how long?]

Can we just ask the question on our minds already: Is the President sick again?
