Former foreign minister, Gbenga Ashiru, is dead

Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, 66, Nigeria’s former Foreign Affairs Minister, who served under President Goodluck Jonathan from 2011 to 2013, has died inside a South African hospital where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

The career diplomat, who hailed from Ogun State, had been in the hospital since September after falling ill.

Ashiru was credited with laying the framework that saw the election of Nigeria as a non-permanent member of the UN security seat in 2013.
