Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo freed by the police

by Stanley AzuakolaIt was the kind of operation that even the American Navy Seals would have been proud of. The Delta State Police Command on Sunday night pulled off a remarkable raid which led to the release of ex-Super Eagles and Udinese of Italy midfielder, Mr. Christian Obodo, from the hands of his abductors in Isoko area of the state.

Considering that this is coming on the heels of botched attempts to release kidnapped foreigners in Kebbi and Kano, this is by no means a mean feat.

Thankfully, everyone can now rest at ease as a result of the breakthrough in the matter which was giving the country some more negative publicity – as if we hadn’t already had enough.

Obodo was seized by a four-man gun-toting gang in front of a church in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state on Saturday morning.

His kidnappers had earlier demanded a ransom of about N28 million for his freedom.

But, the state Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan talked tough. “Make sure the football star is released, and do not negotiate with the hoodlums,” he said to the police.

Consequently, it was gathered that policemen stormed the hideout of the hoodlums in Emevor, Isoko South LGA, after a tip-off, and the star was released on Sunday night.

Eight persons were reportedly arrested in connection with the kidnap.
