So Governor Fayose likes the APC but is just scared of becoming irrelevant, is that it?

The APC is winning.

Right now. Since 2015. And at least more than any other political party in Nigeria right now.

That is not to say that it’s all well and good within the ruling All Progressive Congress. They have a President in office who cannot ensure that a Senate controlled by his own party members confirms his political appointee. That’s really almost as bad as it can get. But when you think about the fact that the other parties are led in opposition by a People’s Democratic Party that is as splintered as a shattered glass, then you’ll figure that it’s true what they say about a one-eyed king.

Besides, using the meter that works in Nigeria to judge how popular a party is, the APC has welcomed more defectees (possibly not a word but you get it). than any other party in the past few months.

So yeah the APC is winning.

And because the APC is winning, you’ll expect that a Governor with the ambitions of a lion – to become President – will get with them. A Governor like Ayodele Fayose. Forget that he’s said things about APC and its members that will give us receipt material for a mighty long time if he ever decided to join – when has that ever stopped a Nigerian politician, right?

It’s the reason he’s just given for not wanting to join that has piqued our interest.

As always, without any bidding that is public knowledge, the Governor’s press secretary granted us another insight into the mind-boggling workings of Fayose’s mind late last night:

“Some people have been making overtures to me to join the APC, but I cannot join them. With what have they repaid somebody like Asiwaju Tinubu? He worked and helped the party to secure victory but has been dumped. That is not a party I would be interested in joining.”

First, poor Fayose. No wonder he’s done everything lately as far as public ridiculing goes, to ensure that his is a name no one from Ekiti land to the Aso Rock will forget – including an unforgettable dog fight with the wife of the President. Since the dwindling popularity of his party will not guarantee him a win for his next endeavour in 2019, he’s had to fight as crazy as he can to stay popular with as wide a demographic as possible.

Secondly, we are not sure the Asiwaju will approve of Fayose shading him but even we have to ask as an aside: “how far with the man who many reckon is the most powerful political leader in the South-west? He has made less and less awe-inspiring moves since the 2015 elections. Should we be on the look out for something even more “mega” or should just forget it?

Finally, and most importantly, someone needs to let Governor Fayose know that his constant press-statement-releasing on almost every issue is starting to make him look like a cry-baby constantly seeking attention that no one can spare at the moment.
