Groups condemn Trump’s cabinet cut down on Obamacare spending

Following Obamacare budget cuts by the Trump administration, some groups responsible for people’s sign up for the program say the cuts to their funding will surely reduce enrollment rate in the healthcare exchanges this year, The Hill reports.

Notable among the groups, are known “navigators”, who say they’re worried they’ll have to permanently downsize their staff strength, as well as education and outreach about the healthcare law ahead of the forthcoming open enrollment period beginning Nov. 1.

Kathie M. Hiers, CEO of AIDS Alabama, an active group which has benefitted grossly from the grant in signing up people said, “The ultimate goal is to try to get as many folks signed up onto it as we can who are eligible.

“Anything like this, when you take away the marketing, and you take away the personnel, that’s going to decrease enrollment. It’s hard for me to say exactly how much, but it will decrease,” she said.

The cabinet’s move to slash funding would not be unconnected to the Obamacare repeal failure by Republicans, and supporters have alleged that the new development may be an intentional effort by President Trump to undermine the program.

The White House announced last week a 90 percent reduction from last year’s advertising stake for enrollment season saying the government would only spend $10million to publicise.

In entirety, the government is making a 41 percent cut in the healthcare policy funding as it would only release $36.8million as against the previous 62.5million grant for enrollment.

“I was completely caught off guard. I was stunned,” said Jodi Ray, the director of Florida Covering Kids and Families, which is affiliated with the University of South Florida.

Most of the groups haven’t learnt their fate in terms of merited funding as at Thursday. But, a Health and Human Services (HHS) spokeswoman Caitlin Oakley said the “information is forthcoming.”

Referring to the White House’s justifying claims of “diminishing returns” from the ObamaCare spending, Caitlin said through an email to reporters, “Judging effectiveness by the amount of money spent and not the results achieved is irresponsible and unhelpful to the American people”.

The program is “ineffective,” and navigators will be funded going forward based on their performance, she added.
