High Court to decide on #Synagogue coroner’s inquest next week

by Adedayo Ademuwagun

The Federal High Court in Lagos will sit on November 17 to deliver judgement in a suit that seeks to stop the ongoing coroner inquest concerning the Synagogue building collapse.

The inquest began on October 13 and has been happening at the Lagos High Court in Ikeja.

Meanwhile, a lawyer named Olukoya Ogungbeje filed a suit on October 28 to stop the inquest.

The Lagos state government, the state attorney-general — and magistrate Oyetade Komolafe, the coroner, were listed as respondents in the case.

Ogungbeje argued that the coroner inquest was improperly established, and that there would be hinder justice if the coroner’s court bases its decision on the testimonies of the state agencies involved in the inquest.

The lawyer also argued that the inquest negated the principle of natural justice and Section 36 of the Constitution, and is therefore unconstitutional.

The inquest is scheduled to continue on November 19.
