Hoodini: From Nigeria to New York

by Chi Ibe

Chuma Nwokike aka Hoodini, is a Nigerian hip-hop recording artist and record producer. He was born in the Connecticut, USA but is of Nigerian origin.

Drawing inspiration from Kanye West, he grew a fondness for music and in 2010; Hoodini released his first mix tape as a recording artist titled Vaudeville. The mix tape immediately grabbed public attention and later that year, he teamed up with US-Based Nigerian producing duo- Mictunes (who are responsible for such hits as ‘No shaking’ and ‘Can’t do without you’ by Tuface).

Hoodini is currently hard at work in putting together his debut album. His musical influences are artists like Kanye West, Jay-z, Jadakiss and Nas.

In his Nigeria to New York single, he raps on the classic immigrant experience. In the song, we feel his frustration in this line –

“Coz I was run by a system that I slightly obeyed, where every time I resurrect they sent me back to the grave…”
